Carol Ann Duffy and Sheenagh Pugh have both written a selection of poems on the theme of childhood and there are different techniques used by both poets, and that is what I will be talking about in this essay. In the poem "In Mrs Tilschers Class" Carol Ann Duffy uses several themes with the deeper meaning of childhood, such as memories, school, growing up and the loss of innocence and uses imagery and language that engage the 5 senses throughout the poem they would help the reader creates a vivid image in his head of how the author felt when she wrote this poem and could possibly evoke several memories of the reader himself, taking him back to his childhood, which is what makes this poem so effective. He uses the visual sense along with the tactile sense in the opening of the poem which immediately draws the reader in and allows him to feel the deep emotion within the poem. “You could travel up the Blue Nile with one finger, tracing the path” This could also be a metaphor for the transition from childhood to adulthood and the loss of innocence along the way, which is a major theme throughout the collection of poems I wrote. we will discuss in this essay. He also makes another visual reference when he says “Colorful shapes” and “A gold star” which could connote how happy and cheerful childhood is as colors are something that is learned at an early age and children become familiar with objects, people and even personality. a color throughout their childhood. This also helps create a colorful image in the readers' minds which creates a positive outlook on childhood. Sheenagh Pugh's poem "Quetzal" also uses colors to symbolize childishness throughout the poem, from what I believe,... .... middle of paper ...... shows that although she misses home , she also has this new experience with the outside world and feels freer than she did in the barriers of childhood. Furthermore. the form used in this language also draws attention to a single phrase just as Pugh used single word stanzas, however Duffy does this by placing a certain line at the end of the stanza one in italics which draws attention to this line and it really highlights that this is not his usual way of speaking and is completely out of the ordinary. In conclusion, the two poets have very similar styles in writing on the theme of childhood, such as the use of imagery and the depiction of the journey through life and childhood to childhood. adolescence. And also key highlighting in the structure of certain words or lines. This makes the poems very effective. Works Cited Carol Ann Duffy Sheenagh Pugh
