As we have seen, Clare takes great pains to use words that are now out of use to give the reader the feeling of truly being in a world of the past. The problem is that doing so can hinder the reader's understanding. Rather than using such words, it seems more beneficial to focus on using words that are more commonly used, but are still elegant. It's not about simplifying the piece as some might see modern English as doing, but it's about not complicating things for the reader just to make it.
