Every book has its villain and every book has its hero. While I was reading the book Chronicles of a Blood Merchant there was a boy named Xu Sanguan who really struck me. Xu Sanguan continued to be a hero throughout the book. There are many things that Xu Sanguan does in the book that make him a hero, things like persuading Xu Yulan's father not to let Xu Yulan lose his last name, taking Yile under his wing, and even selling blood to provide for his family. After finishing the book Chronicle of a Blood Merchant, Xu Sanguan is definitely the hero of the book. I could read the book a hundred times and never change my mind about who the real hero is. At the beginning of the book it is described what Xu Sanguan's work is. XuWhile working at the silk factory he noticed a very pretty woman who worked in a small snack shop. He noticed her because every time something happened to her she would let out a little cry of "Aiya!". This woman's name is Xu Yulan, also known as “The Queen of Fried Dough” (Hua 21). She was well known in the city because she always changed her clothes three times a day. One day Xu Sanguan finally finds the courage to talk to Xu Yulan. Xu Yulan noticed that Xu Sanguan was talking to a man about a show, and when she turned around again he was still there staring at her. He said, "Why are you staring at me like that? And smiling like that! (Hua 23) The reason why he stared at her like that was because he wanted to give her a gift. Although the fried dough queen didn't know Xu Sanguan, the the next day he let him offer him a good meal that cost Xu Sanguan eighty-three fens. After calculating the price of the meal, Xu Sanguan asked Xu Yulan when they were going to get married , and if she had known that he would want her to marry him for how much she spent she would never have eaten (Hua 24).
