In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby goes through a mental phase that drives him completely crazy. He's not the only character to go through this phase. Most of the main characters went through it and ended up hurting each other. This made everyone go through a mental journey. Nick Carraway stood on the sidelines when he felt drama was coming.
