In modern society, advertising and the media bombard Americans every single day. Television advertising, films, radio and even junk mail have become an everyday part of the lives of many citizens. However, most people don't realize the sinister methods that advertisers and media companies employ to make a profit. The use of subliminal and negative advertising has increased tremendously and there appears to be no intention of stopping anytime soon. This dangerous ploy manipulates the public and causes individuals to unconsciously desire a product or service. It is vital that society understands the danger of this harmful form of propaganda and begins to take a stand against it for the sake of citizens' privacy. Advertisers have adopted sneaky, privacy-invading methods to get money from the public. Examples of these methods include types of “ad creep” such as local advertising, placed in public to force viewers to watch video ads, as well as product placement, the inclusion of products in films and other forms of media (Ruskin and Schor). These advertisements seem negligible, but they create a lasting impression on the viewer, causing the individual to purchase the product at a later time. What is most alarming is the new and growing collaboration between advertisers and scientists, forming the field of neuromarketing (Reid). Although most studies are in a preliminary stage, this science studies the effect of advertising and products on the human brain with the help of an MRI (“Marketing's Mind Control”). As a result, neuromarketing can tell advertisers what needs to be integrated into their advertising and propaganda in order for the public to buy the product or use the service. Neuromarketing... middle of paper... complete control of the thought process, as seen in 1984. Instead of the government attempting to control the public's thoughts, the media could possibly take over this role in order to make a large profit. However, as a blogger named Augustin said, the only way to prevent manipulation is through knowledge. Since advertising plays such an important role in today's society, it would be impossible to eliminate it immediately. By realizing the actions taken by advertisers to manipulate the public into purchasing a product, the act is ineffective. Furthermore, encouraging members of Congress to take a stand against subliminal broadcasting and printing and actively address the issue would decrease the use of devious subliminal messages for profit. Realizing the danger of subliminal advertising, surely these methods will eventually cease to pose a serious threat.
