IntroductionThe “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P) is a concept that has its roots in the philosophy of “Human Security”. Human security can be defined as a focus on the individual human being as the reference object of security distinct from the nation-state. R2P and Human Security have gained momentum in the international community in both the academic and political spheres, with the aim of these concepts becoming justifications for humanitarian intervention. Viewing realism as a security topic dealing directly with state security, it is accepted that nation states have valid concerns in protecting their borders and the populations within from external threats, be they military force or manifestations of problems resulting from illness or economic difficulties. Recent events, including the Darfur crisis, have highlighted threats to people occurring in foreign nations to which realist political theory offers no adequate solutions. A situation that people around the world are increasingly opposing. R2P seeks to address this situation by combining existing realist concerns of sovereignty, with human security ideals of freedom of the individual from hunger, disease and repression. The key to the matter is the United Nations. The UN is an organization that has its origins as an international mediator charged with preserving international peace and security, not protecting the innocent from genocide, although with the prevalence of the R2P concept in international politics, it is now expected that do exactly that, in addition to its role mentioned above. Pressure from advocacy groups representing human rights concerns has given impetus to the United Nations and governments around the world to adopt a more human-centered perspective.Using th...... middle of paper . .....war1.htmSudan-Second Civil War “Global Security.org” viewed May 30, 2010. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/war/sudan-civil-war2.htm International Coalition for the responsibility to protect viewed June 1, 2010 http:// www.responsibilitytoprotect.org/index.php/component/content/article/35-r2pcs-topics/2493-general-assembly-debate-on-the-responsibility-to -protect-and-informal-interactive-dialogueInternational Coalition for the Responsibility to Protect seen on 1 June 2010 http://www.responsibilitytoprotect.org/index.php/crises/crisis-in-sri-lankaTHE SECRETARY GENERAL DEFENDS, CLARIFIES AT THE BERLIN EVENT THE "RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT" ON RESPONSIBLE SOVEREIGNTY: INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION FOR A CHANGED WORLD UNITED NATIONS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INFORMATION SG/SM/11701VIEWED 01 JUL 2010 HTTP://WWW.UN.ORG/NEWS/PRESS/ DOCS/2008/SGSM11701.DOC.HTM
