There are more than 200 musical genres in this world, among these 200 one of these influences our generation the most. The author of “Music Lyrics Offer Earful about Drugs” points out that “substance abuse was more frequently featured in rap music and more rarely depicted in pop music.” (Hitti) This article will show that rap music has an influence on teenagers when it comes to discussing drug-related topics. Not all drugs, but marijuana, also known as “Kush” in the music world. This is the type of influence that teenagers should avoid, for example “This song written and performed by rap star Dr. Dre, titled 'Kush' is a song that strongly refers to a type of marijuana called 'Kush' for streets. The lyrics are as shown: No, ain't no seed in my sack, you ain't never gotta ask me, man / What's smoking? Shit, do it 'til my mind goes / What do you think I'm doing? Eyes down, I'm stoned/high as a mother******, there's no doubt about it” noted by Josh Kerlin (Kerlin) If you've ever heard “don't drop that thun thun” you probably think it's relative or that he should party more, in fact he does but he is also talking about ecstasy. The song was quite catchy so I couldn't believe that this was the meaning of the lyrics. The song was a hit, everyone was singing it, but do they really know what the song means? As I asked around, people were definitely surprised, it was like they were shocked to hear these references in today's music. Over these decades music has evolved: "Today's music is not like the music of past generations and the messages in today's music." I'm not like I used to be. Today's rap is more about obtaining and maintaining an image, whether that image is real or fake is often a mystery. (RJ4AY) Teenagers nowadays are... middle of paper... who are just highly mentioned, which makes teenagers think it's okay. Compare this to a parent telling their child what is right and what is wrong, the more they are told something the more they would listen. In rap music they constantly hear about drugs, so they are very likely to try it or go down the wrong path. Works Cited Hitti, Miranda. “Musical lyrics offer crazy ears about drugs.” CBSNews.
