When Beowulf refers to the battle with Grendel's mother, he states that "the fight would have ended immediately if God had not protected me" (Orla Murphy, 2008). This shows that he feels safer if God helped him and was by his side. God is playing an important role in this, he is testing whether God is real or not and whether he is able to depend on him in time of need.
