“The greatest revolution of our generation is the discovery that human beings, by changing the internal attitudes of their minds, can change the external aspects of their lives” (William James). The Mexican Revolution was a long and bloody period in Mexico. The revolution lasted about 2 decades, and although it is now over, its impact still remains on the country of Mexico. During this time period approximately one million lives were lost, many leaders and presidents were assassinated, and many innocent lives were taken. The main idea of the Mexican Revolution was born from the belief that a few landowners could no longer control the old ways of Spanish colonial rule, but that the land should belong to all the people who worked it and extracted its wealth through their labor. Many small and large groups led by revolutionaries were involved. “The Mexican Revolution was a consequence of the resentment that had accumulated during the 34 years of the Diaz regime” (Overfelt, Robert). Porfirio Diaz was president when the Mexican Revolution began. He had a 34-year reign, from 1876 to 1880 and from 1884 to 1911. Although Diaz modernized many aspects of Mexico, including the creation of railroad tracks, Diaz favored wealthy landowners and industrialists. His close circle of friends... middle of paper... many reforms towards the peasants. He nationalized many important industries such as land, oil and railways. When another revolt was about to break out, the church resisted and said it would surrender to the new government. He created the feudal hacienda system. This made Mexico a mixed economy, combining socialism and capitalism. He left office in 1940. The Mexican Revolution had a great impact on Mexico. It was a very long and bloody battle that lasted about 2 decades. Over 900,000 people died during the revolution. The Mexican Revolution created a constitutional republic in Mexico. Land was also redistributed to the people after the revolution. Even though Mexico had to go through a very difficult time to get what it wanted, the people ended up getting their government and land recreated. The PRI is still effective today in preventing other revolutions.
