Language and culture: Learning languages through the culture of the target languageTeaching English as a foreign language, winter spring 2010Language and culture: Learning languages through the culture of the target languageSince language and culture are related, therefore language cannot be taught without culture (Maria, 2002). How many people learn the culture of the target language when learning a language? Can you say that the person who is perfect in a language can fully understand the culture of the language? I would say that the one who is perfect in the target language may not be perfect in the culture, but he would be better at learning the language if he learned in a culture-friendly environment. Introduction Learning a new language takes a long time, I am one who believes that immersing yourself in the culture of the target language is the most effective way to learn a new language. I am an example of this: After I graduated from high school, I thought that learning a new language would be essential in the future, so I started learning English from January 2006. Learning a new language was not easy, because I simply had exposure to the target language before you start learning. One day, I saw a poster informing about a work camp, where I could do volunteer work in Europe. I thought I could improve my English there, because all the people in the camp were from different countries and the official language was English. I applied for the renovation of an art museum in Eupen, Belgium, run by UNICEF (the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund). I didn't know how to speak English...... middle of paper... but in class sorting students' language proficiency can lead to more active discussion. For future research, I would like to find some results that students who learned a language with culture lessons have positive effects in their subsequent learning outcomes. References1.
