Therapeutic CommunicationCommunication is the process of conveying information to another by using words, actions, or by writing the information down for another person to read. Communication is something that most people do every day and is an important part of life, especially in a work environment. “The concept of communication is an essential part of every profession and is necessary to foster and maintain healthy relationships” (Jasmine, 2009, par. 1). Communication in nursing practice and healthcare is important because when talking to patients, their families, staff, nurse and nursing student must be able to efficiently express the information they want to hear. the other person understands. “Verbal communication is a primary way to convey vital information regarding patient problems in a hospital setting” (Raica, 2009, para. 1). When adequate communication skills are lacking in nursing practice, the possibility of errors and risks to patient safety increases. A crucial aspect of communication that influences the outcome of patient care is how the nurse and nursing student interact and communicate with physicians and other staff members. If the nurse is not clear and concise in conveying patient information to other members of the healthcare team, the quality of patient care may be lower than expected.
