The Hearts and the Fist tells the story of Eric Greitens' astonishing experiences as both a soldier and a humanitarian. Taking on the role of Rhodes Scholar and Navy SEAL, Greitens spent a great deal of time working with volunteers who provide education to children of all ages living on the impoverished streets of Bolivia. He has visited and observed a variety of impoverished countries around the world and learns something from each experience... through others. From the aid workers who simply helped heal and care for wounded and orphaned children, to the soldiers who fought for Afghanistan, they all had a lesson to learn in their hearts. Greitens survived and fought hard every day through the most difficult times, and although people around him were giving up on their dreams, he never let that sink in and kept his ambition alive. Eric Greitens teaches us about different perspectives in life, and that's to overcome an obstacle... any obstacle, you just have to believe in yourself.Retell: What is the message the author is trying to convey? How do you convey this to the reader? The main message of the book is that anyone can overcome anything with the right thoughts and characteristics. Eric Greitens has demonstrated this numerous times in the book, for example, in this quote; “As warriors, as humanitarians, they taught me that without courage, compassion falters and that without compassion, courage has no direction.” (Eric Greitens, The Heart and the Fist: The Education of a Humanitarian, the Making of a Navy SEAL). report: How does this book compare to other books you've read? Character Analysis Eric Greitens: (since this bio does not go into detail about any other person, I am only playing one character) Eric Greitens is an intelligent man who has always set ambitions for himself. He pushed himself to the best of his ability and, thanks to his attitude towards his goals, he always succeeded. throughout the book, Greitens constantly mentioned how hard his life was training BUD. However he never said to himself that he wouldn't make it and in the end he kept his word and was one of the very few to make it.
