Topic > Critical Analysis of China Marine by EB Sledge

The book China Marine by EB Sledge was a biography of EB Sledge's life as a Marine during his guard duty in Northern China. During the Pacific War, Sledge grew tired of waiting for his academic degree and officer commission. He decided to leave Georgia Tech and enlisted in the Marines to join the war. In 1944 he survived the Peleliu and Okinawa war. They were deadly battles and he was on the front lines as an infantryman serving in a rifle company of the First Marine Division. After heavy fighting with Japanese soldiers, on August 14, 1945, the Japanese surrendered unconditionally and World War II ended. Sledge and his fellow Marines felt lucky after hearing that announcement. They thought they would return home after the war ended. However, they received a new order to go to northern China to protect the region from communist China. In this book, Sledge wanted to tell America's effect in the Chinese Civil War and the story of Sledge's life while in Northern China. After seven years of war with Japan, China experiences the explosion of a long latent civil war. The Chinese Civil War was the war between the Chinese Nationalists and the Chinese Communists. “Chiang Kai-shek was the leader of Nationalist China and Mao Tse-tsung was the leader of revolutionary communism” (Sledge xix). American soldier involved in this war to support the Chinese nationalists and defeat the Chinese communists. The Americans wanted to protect Northern China from the Communist Party. Furthermore, the Americans also wanted to protect the region from the Japanese. Indeed, civilians welcomed the Americans who came to their country and had the perception that the American soldiers were the heroes. It was because the Americans successfully defeated Japan, so ... middle of paper ......rse. Sledge is happy to meet the family of Soong Taifoo and Father Marcel. For Sledge, Soong's family was the finest people he had ever met, giving him a mixed feeling of friendship and familial affection. EB Sledge's story as a US Marine during his service in Northern China is evidence that Americans had a great effect on the Chinese Civil War. The Americans lost many soldiers while supporting the Chinese Nationalists in control of all of northern China. Ultimately, the Chinese Communists managed to capture Beijing, and the Chinese Communists lost the war. The life of US Marines in those days was really hard and they sacrificed their lives for the freedom of another country. To summarize, EB Sledge's story was proof of how tough life was for US Marines during their war service. Works CitedSledge, EB China Marine. Tuscaloosa: U of Alabama, 2002. Print
