Home is where we belong. No matter how bad our homes are, we can't stop going back to them. The House on Mango Street is one of the best-selling books for 10th graders. This book is mainly based on four main topics. One of the topics of this book is CONFLICT which is the main root of the book. The root of the book is DUALITY, which is Esperanza used to bring together the arguments of opposites as one. The third root in the book House on Mango Street is SYMBOLISM with which Esperanza concretizes objects or people into her main ideas. The last but not least root used by Esperanza was the UNIVERSAL THEME. Esperanza used this root to show how the people on Mango Street lived and their lifestyles. THESIS The thesis of The House on Mango Street is typically based on Esperanza's struggles that she went through to fit in. These struggles concern cultural heritage, neighborhood, and family economic status. CONFLICTS Throughout the Mango Street House, Esperanza experienced many conflicts. In chapter 3 (Boys and Girls) he experiences the conflict of a sort of loneliness. She is not satisfied with the company of her young sister. In this chapter, Esperanza expresses her feelings of dissatisfaction by saying, “The nanny is too young to be my friend. She's just my sister and it wasn't my fault. In chapter 4, (My Name) Esperanza doesn't like her name; she doesn't like it because of who inherited it. Esperanza inherited her name from her great-grandmother who was raped. Esperanza showed how much she hated her name by saying, “I would like to be baptized with a new name. “ These quotes show that she really hated… middle of paper… here, they just want to leave the place but according to their paradigm it is very difficult to do. According to Esperanza, people on Mango Street are stuck as if they were in prison. She thinks these people need her more than they think. Esperanza still thinks she needs to be here on Mango Street but her cultural heritage is the problem and that's why it was hard for her to leave or say goodbye to Mango Street CONCLUSIONThe thesis of The House on Mango Street is all about Esperanza grappling with her cultural heritage, her neighborhood, and her family economic situation. Esperanza always consoles herself by writing stories and being happy with her friends. Even though Esperanza had to go through all this, it didn't stop her from being a hard-working and confident girl. Works Cited English
