Mozart and Beethoven: lives and music comparedIn 1747 Leopold Mozart married Maria Anna Pertl. Leopoldo and Maria Anna would have seven children, two of whom would survive. Maria Anna born in 1752 who the family called Nannerl. Then in 1756 Wolfgang Amadeus who was nicknamed Wolfgangerl. Wolfgang Amadeus was not his original birth name, it was shortened to this by Joannes Chrisostomos Wolfgangus Gottlieb. It is no wonder that two of the children also survived; “Given Leopold's insistence that they be raised on a diet of water and gruel, the wonder is that any survived.” (Siepmann, Mozart His Life and Music) Leopold Mozart was himself a great musician and was an accomplished violinist, composer and author. He wrote a well-received publication on the art of playing the violin. He began teaching Nannerl's music when Mozart was 3 years old. Mozart played after his sister's lessons ended and by the time he was four he could play pieces from memory. When Mozart was five years old he made his first debut at the University of Salzburg. Shortly after this debut Mozart and Nannerl began touring with their father. In 1762 the two sons went to Munich to play for the Elector Maximilian III and then to play at the royal court in Vienna. Wolfgang contracted scarlet fever while in Vienna and his father said: "This matter has cost me at least fifty ducats" (Siepmann, Mozart His Life and Music) Wolfgang suffered from a phobia of trumpets, when he was ten his father tried to curing young Wolfgang of this ailment by having Johann Schachtner blow one in his direction, Wolgang collapsed in fear.
