Located in the developing country, the Dominican Republic; the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW), created by the United Nations in 1976 on the recommendation of the First World Conference of Women. INSTRAW is an intergovernmental organization (IGO) whose mission is: "dedicated to research, training and knowledge management in collaboration with governments, the United Nations system, civil society and academia to achieve equality gender and women's empowerment". Action-oriented research from a gender perspective that has a concrete impact on policies, programs and projects. Research conducted by INSTRAW includes tracking women's migration, studying the role of women in government, and examining gender dimensions, such as the availability of water, food, credit, health, education, and employment. Additionally, INSTRAW examines women's safety against violence. Through research, INSTRAW strengthens the capacities of key stakeholders to integrate gender perspectives into policies, programs and projects. INSTRAW collaborates with government organizations, such as the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Official Development Assistance of Japan. Together, these organizations help create policies and programs to stop violence against women in South Africa. Some things INSTRAW can do is create education and training programs for the people and government of South Africa.
