The media is the main influence in creating rape culture, they spread rape myths like a fire in a dry forest; much like a forest fire, it quickly gets out of control, and the hatred and hostility stirred in those who adhere to rape culture can cause harmful outcomes for victims of sexual abuse and rape. Meyer (2010.) conducted a study using the Daily Mail's opinion column to determine how likely people are to hold rape myths in high regard. In her study, she found that many regular columnists believed that it was women's responsibility to take care of themselves and prevent themselves from becoming victims of rape when they engaged in binge drinking activities. Most columnists believe that women cause rape and therefore “ask for it.” It is believed that women are held responsible for sexual abuse committed against them when they drink alcohol, while men face no repercussions for participating in the same behaviors. For this reason, rapists are no longer held guilty of the sexual abuse they cause. Victims are now fully responsible for the rape they suffer. (Meyer. 2010.) As stated previously, the media also spreads rape culture through news and talk shows (Ullman. 2010. Rhalek. 2013.) Victims of sexual abuse are often silenced by the media due to poor representation behind them. Survivors' stories are distorted by talk shows, while blame is implicit in talk show hosts. The women who appear on these television programs to share their stories are portrayed as naive and responsible for their rape. The “real rape stereotype” becomes prevalent because no case of sexual abuse is considered real rape unless there are extralegal elements (such as alcohol or drugs). “Real rape” st...... half of the document ......nography on college age, male population. They summarized that…this study showed the strong link between men's viewing of pornography and behavioral intent to commit sexual violence. Furthermore, when men view sadomasochistic and rape-related pornography, their danger to women simultaneously increases. The use of these two types of pornography makes men significantly more likely to report rape intent, stronger beliefs in rape myths, a decreased willingness to intervene in a potential sexual assault, and a lower sense of efficacy in intervene in a potential sexual assault situation. For men seeking a life path centered on attitudes that reflect accurate information about rape, not committing sexual violence, a greater willingness to help others in difficult situations, and a greater understanding of how to do so, staying away from pornography is an obvious choice..
