The period following the First World War was politically very unstable. Many different types of governments were forming throughout Europe, such as fascism and communism. One country that particularly had to deal with this political fluctuation was Germany. After the war, Germany was forced to adopt a democracy known as the Weimar Republic, but this government soon collapsed and Hitler's fascism took over. There were various factors that contributed to the fall of the Weimar Republic, but the three main ones were the lack of popular support for the government, the lack of efficiency and internal organization, and competition from other more conservative parties such as the Nazis. The first major reason why the Weimar Republic failed was that it was extremely inefficient and had no clear goals set within the government. All the different ideas coming from the parties of the republic created a situation in which the German people received very unclear and vague messages. This problem can be seen in the struggle between the German Democratic Party and the Communist Party. Troeltsch, theologian and leader of the German Democratic Party, stated: “Development will not stop at democracy, but a 'dictatorship of the proletariat' will take the form of terrorist rule by a minority” (Doc 1). This statement is only partially reliable because Troeltsch was a politician and would benefit from exaggerating what would happen if the opposing party took control. The exact opposite of this idea is the opinion of Clara Zetkin, a member of the Communist Party. When he talks about how the only way Germany can really get rid of the monarchy is through a revolt of the proletariat, you can see that he obviously embraces communist politics.
