Air Pollution in Auckland1. Introduction: “Auckland has the worst air pollution in New Zealand compared to all other cities in New Zealand,” according to the recent report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) (Field, 2011). The level of air pollution is double that of Sydney. According to the above findings, air pollution is the main health hazard in the New Zealand community. The following simply describes the trend of air pollution in Auckland and the health problems experienced in the Auckland community as a result of this serious environmental problem. Air pollution poses a major threat not only to Auckland but to many cities and regions around the world. With the industrial revolution the problem begins to appear but the world notices the severity of the problem in the year 61 of the Common Era (Ask.com). Auckland is the urban area of the North Island and geographically surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. The picturesque setting with cliffs and mountains makes Auckland one of the most beautiful cities in the world. But Auckland has been dangerously affected by the threat of air pollution as the largest ozone hole has occurred over this beautiful country. In 2011 Auckland City Council released data that 700 people had died from air pollution. It is also said to be exceeding national standards on the level of air pollution. Mainly two types of air pollutants: Primary pollutants and Secondary pollutants. Primary pollutants come from human activities. The inaction of primary pollutants with the atmosphere is defined as secondary pollutants (foundation, 2013). The main pollutants can be present in ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and lead.
