Topic > Problematic behavior in people with learning…

This activity will focus on a group of service users, more specifically adults. It will explain the problematic behavior in people with learning disabilities through a psychological perspective which is behaviorism, and finally it will discuss how a social worker could address the problem by applying a psychological intervention or approach which will be behavior modification. Valuing People (2001) recognizes that learning disabilities can limit a person's daily functioning, which can result in a low status within the society in which they live, producing social exclusion. Communicating can be difficult for people with learning disabilities because their difficulties can include language impairments, problems with non-verbal communication and impact on their social interaction (Genders et al 2002). Adopting a social model, Oliver (1996) stated that “according to the social model, disability is anything that imposes restrictions on disabled people” (p.33). One psychological perspective that provides some insights is behaviorism, established by B. F. Skinner (1976). Behaviorism is underpinned by the idea that a person's behavior is shaped by their experiences which can be changed by learning new behaviors. Norman and Redfern (1997) define behavior as the individual's actions and activities that are shaped by the environment, place, time, people and objects present in the activities. They go on to suggest that behaviorism is a philosophy of mind with assumptions about human nature. This perspective focuses on behavior and its consequences which can be characterized by positive reinforcement (Norman & Redfern, 1997). Behaviorism is a learning theory that suggests that all behaviors are obtained as a result of conditioning... mid article ......mediated environment. The practitioner must ensure that the priorities and interests of service users are taken into account by creating a relationship of trust and confidence (Norman and Redfern, 1997). In conclusion, from a behavioristic perspective, pleasant experiences are positive reinforcers and unpleasant experiences are negative reinforcers that influence a person's behavior. Behavior modification for people with learning disabilities helps services manage some service users who present significant challenges to services. However, it is necessary to recognize the role of Campling (2006): “Social workers must be able to help individuals access services that will allow them to maintain independence and choice in their lives” (p.115). To this end, behavior modification is an understanding of behaviorism that can be a useful tool to use for social work.
