Topic I enjoyed writing this article because I love skiing. This article and the next one are important to me because safety when skiing is an important issue. I've discussed the validity of ski helmets on the market today compared to the Consumer Reports test released last ski season. I just wrote for this and went back and edited it later. I went to a few different sites to find information to use in this document along with the information provided in the article. In 2002, approximately 23,000 people suffered head injuries in skiing-related accidents. “Ski Helmets: Safety on the Slopes” was written about by the authoritative Consumer Reports Magazine, and is itself a great resource when looking for information on major consumer products. Published in December 2003, "Safety on the Slopes" is aimed at both skiers and snowboarders. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that a helmet could have prevented or reduced the severity of approximately forty percent of such injuries. The article in question analyzed fit, price and performance and compiled an overall score to better help the consumer make a more educated guess when choosing a ski helmet. Through logic, credibility and emotions/values/beliefs, I believe that "Ski Helmets: Safety on the Slopes" is a great resource for finding the helmet best suited to the individual buyer. Through a clear logic the reader is attracted to the importance of helmets in skiing. To the author's credit they used organization, persuasion and common sense to make their points. The best way to present a topic is in a solid, organized format. “Safety on the Slopes” opens with the story of 5-year-old Eliot Levmore who crashes into a tree while skiing in Co...... middle of paper ...... This article is no exception; safety is implicit in the search for a helmet best suited to the skier that is not only safe but asks a respectable price. “Ski Helmets: Safety on the Slopes” is effective in providing information to show the importance of helmets on today's slopes. Of the three ideas expressed in this article, logic contributed the most to the discussion. Logic worked better in this topic because in a case like this the quality is better shown through real world testing. This article is aimed at safety-conscious skiers and has done a good job of presenting its ideas. Having been a skier myself for 14 years, I was attracted to this topic and would therefore consider purchasing a helmet. Knowing a little about what skiers are looking for when they buy a product, I believe that by reading this they will want to consider purchasing a ski helmet for their next outing on the slopes.
