#6Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or respond to insulin. Insulin is a hormone. When the body is unable to produce enough insulin or respond to insulin, abnormal carbohydrate metabolism and high glucose levels in the system occur. Insulin is needed to convert sugar and carbohydrates into energy. There are two main types of diabetes, type 1, for which onset is usually in children, is known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin (American Diabetes Association, n.d.). The second type of diabetes is type 2, for which onset generally occurs in adults. A third type of diabetes is gestational diabetes, which occurs in women during pregnancy generally around the 24th week. In most cases, women will experience relief from diabetes symptoms after birth. There are several comorbidities associated with diabetes, such as kidney failure, glaucoma, and diabetes. other eye diseases, neuropathy, stroke and hypertension. Diabetes is considered a costly disease due to the comorbidities associated with it. There are over 25 million diabetics in the United States, or over 8% of the population, however within the Asian Indian population estimates of type 2 diabetes are between 17 and 29% (Mandeep Bajaj, 2013). As further information, according to the New York Times article, The Global Diabetes Epidemic, diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in India, China and other emerging economies. Indians are predisposed to diabetes, particularly if overweight (Lipska, 2015). Another risk for Indian Americans is that much of the food is carbohydrates, as many Hindu Indians are vegetarians.
