What if an individual had the ability to create the perfect child? If you were able to choose every characteristic of your child, would you take advantage of this opportunity? Designer baby, a child whose genetic makeup has been selected to destroy a particular defect or to ensure the presence of a particular gene. Parents are able to determine physical traits such as hair color, eye color, skin tone, and gender. The purpose of tailor-made babies is to eliminate the chances of having a baby with genetic disorders. In Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, Victor tries to take on the role of God, hoping to create the perfect monster. Mary Shelley portrays Victor and society's continued rejection of the monster to demonstrate that taking on the role of God doesn't always work out in the end. Engineered babies may seem like a great biotechnological innovation; however, unexpected side effects may occur directly on the child.
