Does music have positive effects on the mind? Few can deny that music isn't powerful, but whether it's good or not is a different question. It becomes a common factor among people where just a single phrase can transform a crowd into a single entity of spirit and cacophony. However, this power can do more harm than good in some circumstances, creating a stereotype for musical genres. At Metallica's concert in Montreal a few years ago, the show was forced to stop because the singer was injured. The crowd became agitated and began to riot, destroying chairs, fighting among themselves and overturning cars. The underlying question is: “Would this happen at a Frank Sinatra concert?” (Sun Sentinel, 1999) To further this stereotype, Darragh McManus stated that those who listen to rap have a higher rate of breaking the law and are more likely to do more harm than good, while at the other end of the spectrum, those who listen to classical music tend to have higher incomes and are usually well educated. (McManus, 2013) Even with these few stereotypes, the predominant factor of music's effect on the brain is positive with multiple successful uses of music therapy with those who have disorders and with those who listen to and perform music. Music gives color to a black world and white world while spinning fantasies in the minds of all who listen to it. Dr. Steven Moffic, a professor of psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin, says music evokes emotions in us that date back to when mothers sang to soothe their children to sleep or to ward them off from pain. He also takes note of a study conducted at Alzarha University in Iran with depressed patients. Those who listened to Beethoven's 3rd and 5th sonatas saw a decrease...... middle of paper ......o. 2, Special Focus: Music and the Brain (September 2000), pp. 33-39+58Music makes you more intelligent and creative.
