Ban SmokingCigarette smoking has been a huge public health problem in America for many years. They should be banned because they have caused the death of many people. The United States government along with other countries such as the United Kingdom have moved towards banning cigarette smoking in public places. Defenders of this approach argue that smoking cigarettes causes health risks for nonsmokers. This could lead to an important economic consideration since tobacco is the second leading cause of mortality in the world. “[Tobacco] exacts a terrible toll in health, lives and dollars on families, businesses and government. Tobacco kills more than 400,000 people every year: more than AIDS, alcohol, traffic accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined. Measures have been enacted to control the supply and demand of tobacco products and to protect public health. Some of the health effects associated with smoking cigarettes are: lung cancer, lower respiratory problems, respiratory tract infections, asthma, cardiovascular disease, eye and nose irritation, and low birth weight in children of non-smokers. For every eight smokers who die each year from tobacco use in the United States, one nonsmoker will die from the harmful gases of secondhand smoke. In light of the scientific evidence, there is no justification for the continuation of the deadliest of all cigarette flavors, menthol. The aroma of menthol is the source of addiction for almost half of ten smokers. Furthermore, the occurrence of health problems related to irregular tobacco among the minority is alarming. Racial and ethnic minorities, particularly African Americans, bear a disproportionate burden of tobacco-related illnesses.
