When we talk about exercise, an associated thought is assumed to be weight loss. Within this article the exercise is evaluated based on the opposite of this assumption. Canadian researchers conducted a study on twenty-four men ranging in body size from thin to obese, some with medical conditions. Participants had to follow an intense aerobic exercise program for one hour five times a week. The twist in this study was that participants were told to consume as many calories as they had burned off, to ensure they didn't lose weight. After three months, measurements were taken and the men had lost a centimeter from their waistlines. Additionally, levels of a chemical produced by fats were reduced. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to inform people that if you do not see weight reduction with continued exercise, hope should not be given up. The common target audience for this article is men and women, of all sizes. I would say that between the ages of twenty and forty-five this article could catch the attention of many. Evaluation: Unlike some course readings, this article describes exercise without weight loss. For example, within change processes, one principle is contingency management. This process relates rewards and punishments to behavior. If one were following a......middle of paper......precise efforts. We will make an even bigger mistake if, in doing so, we become discouraged more easily and give up on staying fit and active” (P. #8). Since I have discussed the benefits of exercise beyond weight loss, this quote reiterates those statements. We all have bad experiences with different things tried. Going to a new doctor, for example, be an example from the previous lesson. If you have a negative experience, you will connect it to the place or action you incorporated during this time. Therefore, if you exercise and don't see weight loss results, you will associate this with failure or some emotion that leads to stopping the act. The quote listed above tries to encourage the opposite. Simply put, mistakes are made by giving up so easily when early encounters of disappointment bring lack of interest and prevent further motivation.
