The reader sees that throughout the play conflict through confusion was another effect that comes from all this mistaken identity. The first person to really experience this is Antonio when he believes that Sebastian has betrayed him. We see this when he says, “But oh, how vile an idol this god shows! You made a good impression, Sebastian, too bad. In nature there is no stain except the mind. No one can be called deformed except rude. Virtue is beauty, but the beautiful evil ones are empty trunks or flowered by the devil” (p. 107). In that part of the play the reader sees that Antonio truly believes that Viola is Sebastian and says that he is a merchant and is not as good as he seemed. This shows how mistaken identity causes conflict through confusion because Antonio mistook Viola for Sebastian, and because of this “betrayal” a great relationship took a bad turn. This can also be seen between the characters of Orsino and Viola. After Orsino learns that Cesario has apparently married Olivia, he says, “O you fake puppy! What will you be when time has cast a cloud over your case? Or wouldn't your art grow so quickly that it would destroy your own journey?
