Metabolic syndrome is described as a collection of metabolic risk factors that combine together to create a single individual health problem. Individual factors that combine to create this problem are insulin resistance, hypertension (a form of high blood pressure), cholesterol abnormalities, impaired glucose tolerance, a tendency to develop fat around the abdomen, and an increased risk of coagulation. Metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases are closely related. This syndrome is considered a risk factor for several cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes that occurs due to insulin resistance and abnormal function and structure of body fat. Insulin resistance refers to the reduced ability of cells to respond to the action of insulin in promoting the transport of sugar, glucose, from the blood to muscles and other tissues. Metabolic syndrome is also known as syndrome X or dysmetabolic syndrome, and people who are overweight or obese are all at higher risk for this syndrome. This syndrome and its factors are a leading cause of death among adults here in the United States. Metabolic syndrome alone is not the cause of all deaths, but some of the factors linked to the syndrome are heart attacks, strokes, kidney defects, and more. The way we could help control this disease is to start when children are young and get them to eat well and exercise at that time. As for adults, we could all try to motivate our family and friends to eat well and be active. Finally, as a country, people should talk openly about diseases and educate everyone about what they are putting into their bodies and how badly they are harming their bodies. I think once people know what might happen in the future and the risk factors, they will be able to do something about it.
