They eat horses, right? Many Americans have a hard time thinking about eating horse meat. Every year many horses are slaughtered for meat which is exported to other countries. “The US Humane Society website states that 55,776 horses were slaughtered in the United States last year, and thousands more were transported to Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered there (Lum). By eliminating unwanted horses, the horse market will begin to steadily rise. Slaughtering horses allows farmers to benefit from old horses and benefits the economy. Unfortunately, people who keep too many horses find it difficult to get rid of them every year. This forces them to have to find another place for the extra horses. “The people will drive them out into the fields and leave them to starve. This alternative is less humane, more wasteful and simply stupid” (Maese). The problem of starving horses is nothing new to the equine industry. For years the Amish tied horses to lampposts that they could no longer afford to feed, and some people who get the horses don't have the means to care for them. Even if it's not really the horse's fault, at the same time, slaughtering them provides a clean, humane and quick end to what would otherwise be a miserable last days of their life. Not to mention that they could be used in another form. Sometimes it is this sacrifice that is necessary for the benefit of the industry. Over the years, many people's opinions have begun to change about horses in America. We started from the idea that Native Americans had of using the whole animal when it was hunted, to this day Americans don't even want to use a horse if it isn't alive. This must lead one to wonder how exactly this change occurred. It's all PETA and this... half the paper... kill a suffering horse and use the meat, rather than kill a suffering horse and waste it.Works CitedDrape, Joe.
