Genocides have occurred throughout recorded history and continue today. Before the Jewish genocide, commonly called the Holocaust, there were traces of aggression against Jews. “Even in the ancient world, when Roman authorities destroyed the Jewish temple in Jerusalem and forced the Jews to leave Palestine.” (History Channel). During the Enlightenment, Napoleon created a law that ended the restrictions placed on Jews. Hitler assisted in the German army during World War I; the Jews were blamed for the country's defeat. Hitler was fixated on the idea of domination of the German race. “On January 20, 1933, Hitler became supreme ruler of Germany.” (History Channel). Some families learned that SS officers would come to chase Jews from their homes and send them to concentration camps. Parents hid their children in attics, boarding schools and orphanages. It was easier for the children to hide because they could blend in with the non-Jewish children. Jews who could easily be identified as Jews could change their names and convert to the Christian religion. The Jews were extremely cautious so as not to get caught, which would have forced them to move frequently from one hiding place to another. Some children were sent to live with complete strangers so as not to be discovered. Most of these children would never see their parents again. Jews were forced to evacuate their homes and go to concentration camps. “In September 1939, the German army occupied the western half of Poland.”(History Channel). During the Holocaust, Jews were not the only targets; Gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses and socialists were also sent to concentration camps.
