Are women still known as the weaker sex? Today, women think they can get the same recognition as men with hard work and determination. While this idea is true, some cultures still emphasize the idea that men will always be the more powerful sex, proving that sexism still plays a role in society. Gabriel Garcia Márquez displays the same type of prejudice throughout his novella, Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Set in a small Colombian town, Angela Vicario was brought home after her wedding night by her husband, Bayardo San Roman, when he discovered she was not a virgin. His actions brought shame to his family. When asked who the man who took her virginity was, Angela said it was Santiago Nasar. Santiago Nasar was a very well known and wealthy man in the city. Angela's brothers, Pablo and Pedro Vicario, planned to kill Santiago Nasar for the sake of their family's honor. Many citizens were warned of the plan to kill Santiago but no one was able to tell them before the murder occurred. Some did not take the Vicario brothers seriously when they were informed of the assassination plan. The mayor, Colonel Lazaro Aponte, also learned of the brothers' plan and yet did nothing to prevent Santiago from being brutally stabbed to death. The reasons behind Santiago Nasar's murder death were the passive actions of the citizens, the Vicario brothers' need to protect their family's honor, and the double standard on gender roles played within the city. The citizens who had been warned of the Vicario brothers' plan to kill Santiago Nasar were responsible for the crime due to their negligence. As more and more people learned of the plan, everyone decided not to get involved so as not to have to get their... half of the paper... the people of the town involved, protecting a family's heritage. honor and the lack of freedom that women had in the city. Women have finally won their freedom. Women now run for president, play the same sports as men, and their reputations aren't based on how many men they've slept with. Garcia Márquez shows readers how culture and society can make a difference in one's life. If Angela had lost her virginity before the wedding now and not when the story took place, it would not have been a big deal and no man would have been allowed to take another's life for any excuse. If society had not changed, women would still be treated as house slaves with very little education and dependent on one man for their entire lives. Works Cited Marquez, Gabriel Garcia.
