Five themes expressed through "The Power of Place"Harm de Blij and his "The Power of Place: Geography, Destiny and the Harsh Landscape of Globalization" it truly describes how geography is viewed in the world today. In particular, one of the main themes it addresses is the idea of globalization. He actually calls these people the “globals”. At the beginning of his book he describes two different types of people: local and global. The difference between these people is that locals are the poorest, least mobile and most sensitive to the concept of place. On the other hand, Globals are the luckiest population, and are a small group of people who have experienced globalization firsthand (5). This idea of globalization is one of the main themes Blij refers to throughout the book, but he also indirectly refers to the five themes of cultural geography: cultural regions, cultural diffusion, cultural interaction, cultural ecology, and cultural landscapes. Through Blij's analysis these five themes are revealed in detail and help explain his overall idea of globalization in today's world. An evident theme in Blij's "Power of Place" is the concept of cultural regions, primarily his formal analysis, fundamental and peripheral areas. To introduce the idea of cultural regions, he mentions how many of the world's poor and underdeveloped nations are part of the world's periphery. In particular, referring to the Blij map on page 14, many of the developed countries are among the world's leading nations: Japan, Australia, the United States, Canada and Western Europe. Blij explains through his diagram that the suburbs are located in Southeast Asia, Africa, South America and the Middle East (14). Blij des...... middle of paper ......nging occurs through trade and migration (155). Blij makes many references to cultural landscapes, but the most notable are those of India and Myanmar. Blij clearly gave this book historical significance by mentioning the idea of geography and how it plays a role in societies around the world. However, the five themes of cultural regions, cultural diffusion, cultural interaction, cultural ecology and cultural landscapes are all clearly defined within a specific context for a particular nation. Through reading this intriguing piece of literature I received the underlying idea that Blij firmly believes that the landscapes of the world realm will not change. De Blij's worldview of regions, diffusion, interaction, ecology, and landscapes allowed him to simultaneously connect issues ranging from the United States to Southeast Asia.
