Across the world, high levels of poverty in some areas are extremely common, especially in overpopulated and less developed regions. Only recently has the idea of poverty and helping the less fortunate become a socially accepted topic for those living in developed regions. “The turn of the century was marked by the emergence of an extraordinary global consciousness: an awareness of poverty in the world and the articulation of the will to end poverty” (Roy, 6). This new awareness of poverty in the world led to the need for action and to address poverty and underdevelopment the idea of microfinance was created. India has experienced microfinance for both good and bad, and I want to use this idea of constructive and unwanted outcomes within microfinance to show how microfinance can be a saving grace or mirage for some microentrepreneurs. I decided to look at microfinance in India in relation to poverty, development and women. I want to show the positive, but also some negative, effects that microfinance has had in areas of Indian Country in terms of development, and I want to show how different mindsets regarding how microfinance and microlending are viewed can differ and cause problems or stimulate realization. Before I look at how microfinance has affected areas of Indian Country, I want to break down what I believe microfinance is, and then I would like to show how different viewpoints and applications of the idea of microfinance could be used. I believe that microfinance is a form of lending aimed at the poorest people, including women, and these loans initially had the main purpose of eliminating poverty in a certain sense. “Individuals… half the paper… the ability to access capital whereas normally, under previous conditions, they were unable to obtain loans from banks due to lack of social, economic and financial status.
