Once launched on the road, the vehicles will be able to communicate with each other and be connected to a smartphone app that will allow people to call them, as they would make a taxi (Lindsay). It's not the same as Google's car, but there is the concept of being driven by a car. Similar to the Lutz, Google's robotic car uses a Lidar remote sensing system that allows the car to form a 3D map of its environment. This map is then combined with a high definition world map with inch accuracy which allows the car to drive itself (Lindsay). Even as the UK is marking these major transportation milestones, the US was the first country to allow the testing of driverless cars, although only four states allowed it: California, Florida, Michigan and Nevada (Lindsay). In time, the 4 states that allow driverless cars could become 50. After all, it might not take long after hearing that Google Inc. reported that after driving 1.7 million miles in six years, its more than 20 driverless cars have been involved in 11 accidents, none of which were caused by the vehicles' robot drivers (Company Insurance). Even with statistics like that it is difficult to say whether this shift will extend to company car and fleet insurance as this is a new field. For the idea of the driverless car to explode in
