The stranger, as Simmel suggests, helps individuals build their own identity within the group, they can do this through imitation by adopting certain styles. By imitating, the individual experiences the feeling of being part of the group, providing the individual with the satisfaction of not “standing alone in his actions” (Simmel, 1908, p.295). The foreigner and fashion operate similarly in terms of wanting to be different and wanting to fit in. For example, the cherry headband would not become so popular if it were completely different from the traditional style.
