Topic > Year-round education is the school of the future

Of the 3,181 year-round schools, or YRE schools, the dropout rate is less than 2%. The dropout rate from regular schools is around 5%. This means that students in YRE schools are less likely to drop out of school than any other student in a mainstream school. The concept of a YRE school includes longer and shorter breaks. Students attend school for approximately thirty to forty-five days and then receive fifteen to thirty days off. Catie Watson, YRE education expert, said: “One popular YRE calendar uses a 60-20 plan, with students attending school for 60 days and then going on break for 20. Other popular plans include 45-15 and 80 -40" (1). There are two types of YRE schools. The first type is a single path in which students all attend at the same time and take the same breaks. The second type is a multitrack where different groups of students attend school at different times and take different breaks. This type of multitrack instruction is a more personalized form, allowing gifted or talented students to attend school at different times than, for example, special education students. The Brunswick Board of Education should change the current nine-month schedule to a new and improved year-round curriculum so students don't forget material during the long summer break, increasing the capacity schools can hold and the health of students. A common thing students do during the long summer break is forget all the materials they learned last year. With YRE education, all of this can be prevented. Students will tend to retain more information during shorter breaks. For example: "Children benefit academically from the short breaks, since there they do not have to relearn the old... half of the paper... and should move on to year-round school." school system and therefore, generations of students will now benefit from the new and improved school system.
