Kudler Fine Foods is an organization that wishes to evolve and mature as a business and implement practices that illustrate its growth as a business. One particular practice that Kudler Foods wants to implement is to contact and contract with local farmers to gain access to organic foods to sell within all three Kudler Foods branches (UOP, 2008). With the implementation of a new system of this type, changes will have to be made mainly within the operational management of the company. This document will discuss the necessary changes and alterations that must occur to maintain their effectiveness as a business. In addition to changes in operations management, supply chain, quality control tools and performance standards it will also be possible to access how they are affected by the introduction of organic food sales. Operations management is the process used by an organization to obtain the materials or ideas for the product it supplies, the process of transforming them into a product, and the process of providing the final product to a user (Gomez-Meija & Balkin, 2002). . In operations management there are 3 phases which consist of the process a company typically enters or follows. They include: acquisition of inputs, control of the conversion process, and delivery of outputs (Gomez-Meija & Balkin, 2002). In Kudler Foods' eyes, acquiring inputs would mean receiving organic food from local farmers and growers. Purchasing products for Kudler Foods is generally done by purchasing from distribution centers and warehouses. Each of the managers will individually place an order to suppliers using a standard purchase order form based on their department's needs or desires (UOP, 2008). In terms of price, there is no standard price for the items. Department managers are simply asked to find the best possible price while leaving cost disparities between each store. With the introduction of organic foods, Kudler Foods should consider establishing universally accepted prices among local stores and farmers. Managers should still order their products based on supply and demand in their stores. A universal or joint ordering system can result in waste or unused products. Organic foods are a special circumstance item because they typically, especially products such as produce, have a short shelf life. This becomes especially important when purchasing organic foods, which are widely known to be more expensive than non-organic foods (2002). So, it would be better to keep the separate ordering system in place.
