The narrator is not the only black male in the story to have experienced racism with white men. The narrator tries to move away from racism but struggles to do so, he encounters more African Americans who try to do the same thing. All of this provides insight into the correct way to be black in America and also demonstrates how black people should act. It is said that those who do not follow these correct ways betray the race. At the beginning of the story, the narrator's grandfather says that the only way to extinguish racism is for African Americans to be overly nice to whites. The Exhorter named Ras had different beliefs that blacks would rise up against whites and take power from whites. Even though these thoughts come from the black community to take away the freedom of white people, stories reveal that they are just as dangerous as white racism. The narrator has difficulty exploring his identity throughout the entire story. In doing so, he demonstrates how so many black people are betraying their race because they have difficulty dealing with it. At the end of the story, once the battle is over, the boys are taken to collect payment. This is the time when the narrator can present his speech to everyone. He was completely beaten and bruised and blood was pouring from his mouth and nose when he began his speech. All the other men laugh and shout at him,
