It doesn't help that in society working hours are steadily growing every year and there has been an increase in the art of active leisure. There are particular jobs that require workers to deal with sleep restriction. Typically these types of individuals work in healthcare, security, and some forms of transportation. In these types of professions, the effect of sleep deprivation is vital to job performance. However, the need for sleep differs from individual to individual. “Cognitive performance measured in DS studies has included several domains. Performance assessed more thoroughly includes several attentional functions, working memory, and long-term memory. Visuomotor and verbal functions, as well as decision making, were also assessed” (Alhola & Polo-Kantola 2007). The effects of sleep deprivation depend on the type of task they are performing when it comes to cognitive performance. Additionally, the demands required to complete the assignment and the time allotted may also play a role in the results. When it comes to sleep deprivation among college students, “sleep problems are often a primary rather than secondary complaint to depression” (Gilbert & Weaver 2010). Studies were recently conducted to find out whether sleep deprivation and the possibility of poor sleep quality in a random sample of students who were diagnosed as "non-depressed" at an anonymous university. Even though the students were not depressed, poor sleep quality and sleep deprivation were correlated with lower academic scores on a test.
