Like the author Wes and the other Wes, they both didn't have good role models, they barely knew their fathers. Neither had a safe neighborhood where they could focus on school without being distracted by drugs or violence. Both had obstacles to overcome, but they also had the opportunity to get on the right path. Wes did, the other Wes didn't get it. For example, they both had experiences of being arrested and being put in a police car, which was an obstacle. Author Wes was terrified, “…but I was also genuinely scared about what would happen next.” (83). He knew he had made a mistake and wasn't sure if he would end up in a cell or have to face his mother. The Other West was not afraid of the police or its consequences. When he was arrested he continued to deny it as if it would somehow change what had already happened. Even the first time he was arrested for shooting someone, as soon as he got out he started dealing drugs. They both lived in the same town and barely had a relationship with their father. The lack of a role model for each of them had a huge impact on their lives.
