Hunger is a problem that is becoming increasingly prevalent in cities across the United States. In a survey released last year by the U.S. Conference of Mayors' Task Force on Hunger and Homelessness, requests for emergency food assistance were reported to have increased in 21 of 25 major cities surveyed. Of those seeking emergency food, 51% were in families and 37% had jobs. (United States Conference of Mayors Task Force). These findings alone suggest a shift in the visibility of hunger in which many formerly middle-class families have become dependent on food aid. This change should therefore be addressed by institutions and interventions that focus on the issue of hunger. However, in the same report it was found that “In 95% of the cities examined, food pantries reduced the amount of food each person received and soup kitchens reduced the size of meals. In almost every city, the dispensations also limited people's monthly visits.” (United States Conference of Mayors Task Force). As food pantries struggle to handle increased demand due to budget cuts, they may need to approach the problem of hunger differently. One such approach is taken by Food Not Bombs (FNB). Food Not Bombs was first founded in Massachusetts in the 1980s by anti-nuclear activists and has since spread rapidly around the world. Using food that would otherwise be thrown away, the organization serves free vegetarian meals in public spaces to the homeless, the poor and anyone in need. What differentiates Food Not bombs from other charities tackling hunger is that it is not just defined as an organisation, but also as a social movement with a political identity.
