Although he tries to paint a hero's picture, I don't see Roland as a hero. If he had let go of his pride and not been so boastful, his men's lives could have been saved and they could have returned home. The reason modern war stories are made to make the star a hero is because that's what we want in movies now. We want to be able to praise someone for their service, but this could harm the individual because the experience is always mentioned and not about them.
