Jamaica is located 600 miles south of Florida and has a population of approximately 2.9 million (as of 2013). The island is approximately 146 miles long and between 22 and 55 miles wide. It is the third most English-speaking country in the Western Hemisphere behind Canada and the United States (Kingston.usembassy.gov). While when the Spanish conquered the island in the late 1400s and early 1500s, the majority of the population was white, although today the vast majority are of African origin or mixed race. The Honorable Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller now governs the country under the People's National Party. In Jamaica, corruption is a serious problem. While most of the GDP is earned by people making an honest living in agriculture, tourism, or manufacturing, a lot of money is made from the growth and sales of marijuana. For this reason, Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the Western Hemisphere. Additionally, because the crime rate is so high, it can take years for a case to actually go to trial. People “at the top” in Jamaica and Jamaican politics take advantage of this and usually get away with a pat on the hand if they find themselves in the middle of this situation. In February 2012, the Secretary of Homeland Security decided that they would implement a five-year anti-crime plan to bring the country under control and “increase social intervention in criminal-dominated communities (photos.state.gov).”• Available Markets Jamaica's main industries include: tourism, bauxite (which is used to produce aluminum), agriculture, and some manufacturing industries such as rum, cement, metals, paper, chemicals, chocolate, cocoa, and telecommunications (cia.gov). Jamaica worked to make it easier to import and… half the paper… from 2007 to 2010, and it still remains low. They experienced thirteen quarters of decline in their economy between 2007 and 2010 (photos.state.gov). The exchange rate for the Jamaican dollar and the US dollar is 106.25:1 as of 03/25/14 (jncb.com). This value has increased significantly since 2008, when it was 72.24:1 (cia.gov). • GDPJamaica's GDP in 2013 was $25.13 billion with a growth rate of 0.4% (cia.gov). In 2013 the per capita income was $9,000. This ranks 125th among other countries in the world. The majority of their GDP comes from household consumption, which accounts for 86.6%. Imports of goods and services are equal to -58.4%. Public debt is now higher than 145% of the country's GDP. They go into debt substantially every year. They have an agreement with the IMF for payment support of $1.27 billion. They had to engage in tax reforms, which are materializing very slowly.
