Hispanics offer new advances and innovations in technology and science. Hispanics have contributed to the world of science and technology for decades. They have also been contributing for hundreds of years. They have even contributed to science for millennia. More and more Hispanics have earned degrees in more advanced scientific fields, and more and more have made new discoveries in their respective fields. New organizations have also been created to inspire more young Hispanics to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. There have also been honorary awards for Hispanics who have accomplished extraordinary things in science, such as the Hispanic Scientist of the Year Award. This award honors the great achievements of Hispanics in science and is hosted in our city of Tampa. Hispanics have influenced science and technology in the distant past, in the more recent past, in today's advanced fields, and have changed the way we live today and will live tomorrow. The first major Hispanic scientific achievement recorded in history goes all the way back to the late 16th century. The natives of Puerto Rico relied on their astronomical knowledge when processing their crops. In 1581, Juan Ponce de León II analyzed an eclipse and its effects on Puerto Rico. As he explored the wonder of this eclipse, through his experiments he established the exact geographic coordinates of the city of San Juan. His contributions not only created a better understanding of where exactly this place was and paved the way for colonialism in America, but also sparked thousands of other scientific contributions by many culturally diverse people. There were many…paper industries…and not just engineering. There are many other similar organizations out there today that are successful in teaching science to thousands of Hispanics. Hispanics are truly making a difference in our world of science and technology. They have accomplished impressive feats in all fields of science. They will continue to impress and amaze us with their incredible work in science. Their hard work and dedication to doing what they enjoy while achieving great success is what creates a great scientist. Most Hispanic scientists have all of these characteristics. If only their achievements and contributions could be recognized on a global scale. Many thousands of years ago and many hundreds of years ago Hispanics began making great scientific discoveries that changed the world and the way we think. They still do it today and will continue tomorrow.
