They are described as ""lovely, dark, and deep"" (Frost, line 13) and are a sight enjoyed by the man in the poem. They have a legitimate literal meaning, that of being a real forest towards which man looks. When viewed from a symbolic point of view, however, they can be seen as a symbol of peace, death and solitude. This is achieved by the three adjectives, lovely, dark and deep.
