In 1513, Niccoló Machiavelli wrote a political treatise that provides various methods by which a prince can obtain and maintain his political power. This work of literary art aroused quite a bit of controversy and was then banned by Pope Clement VIII because it was contrary to the traditional ethics of the time. According to Machiavelli, a prince should only worry about power and the ways that lead to the success of his political actions. Modern scholars believe that the book was not written as a true guide on how to govern, but more as a satirical work of art on how not to govern a country. Machiavelli originally wrote the letter only in hopes of working as an advisor to the Medici family who ruled Florence, Italy at the time. In chapter 13 of Machiavelli's The Prince it begins with him talking about the military and how mercenaries are very different from auxiliaries. . The comparison states that auxiliaries are much more dangerous for the country than a mercenary because auxiliaries come with ulterior motives. Mercenaries are professional soldiers hired and paid to serve in a foreign army while an auxiliary is an army is an army employed by a prince in a time of need. Machiavelli warns of the dangers of auxiliaries because, whatever the outcome of the war, the country that receives the army's help will have some sort of horrible fate. In case the country wins the war, they risk remaining prisoners of the auxiliaries, leaving negative consequences there, no matter what. Machiavelli, speaking of the dangers of receiving help from such a negative force, reveals his distrust in them. To try to make the reader understand, Machiavelli uses historical examples of people who previously…middle of the paper…should not have been in the position of being a prince. Throughout the chapter, Machiavelli repeatedly talks about virtue, which is one of the concepts he is known for creating as a theory. The actual word comes from the Latin word virtus which are simply qualities found as charming in a man. Machiavelli made virtue become a concept that would be described as the traits a leader should have to maintain order in a country and accomplish great things. Machiavelli also mentions the word fortune which was actually the Greek goddess of good fortune and fortune in Roman culture. In the context in which he uses the word luck, he is actually talking about fate and justice. Unfortunately, The Prince shows how the two words are contradictory because in the right situations virtue triumphs over luck.
