Drenched in sweat and knocked upright, a dream awakened someone in the middle of the night. Everyone dreams, whether they remember what they dreamed or not. A dream is a series of images, thoughts and sensations that occur in a person's mind during sleep. Daydreaming is another state where the mind is elsewhere. The only difference is that daydreaming occurs during wakefulness, while dreaming occurs during deep sleep. Surprisingly, dreams were first recorded since ancient times. From the Romans to the Greeks to the Egyptians, dreams fascinated many. “They believed that dreams were caused by real things that could not be interpreted or controlled by the conscious mind” (“Dreams in Ancient Culture”). The ancients believed that dreams had a purpose behind them and were a message sent from God. Behind every dream there is a meaning; philosophers study to find the reasons why humans dream. Dream recording began in 2000 BC when Egyptians began writing what they dreamed on papyrus. The ancient Egyptians were the first to study dreams and the meaning behind them. They believed that dreams were caused by real things that could not be interpreted or controlled by the mind. “The Egyptians distinguished between three main types of dreams: those in which the Gods required some pious act, those that contained warnings or revelations, and those that occurred through ritual” (“Dreams in Ancient Culture”).
