Christina Rossetti was born in London on 5 December 1930. She is considered by many to be “one of the most important poets of writing” in 19th century England (Everett ). Rossetti is best known for writing a collection of pieces known as Goblin Market and Other Poems, published in 1862 (Christina Rossetti). Many have argued that his most important poem in the collection, “Goblin Market,” has a strong biblical undertone. By analyzing the characters and symbolism of "Goblin Market" compared to their biblical counterparts, we will try to find the true message of the story. When examining the characters in Rossetti's "Goblin Market", it becomes clear that they represent different aspects of religious texts and scriptures. On the one hand we have Laura who represents the innocence of humanity and its battle to resist temptation. On the other side we have Lizzie who plays the role of Laura's sister and savior; very similar to the way Jesus Christ is considered the brother and savior of humanity. These two characters help set the stage for the religious text that is present throughout the story. As you read the story it becomes clear that Laura represents humanity and its struggle to overcome temptation. When Lizzie “stuck a dimpled finger / In each ear, close your eyes and run,” Laura decided to “linger,” which represents how vulnerable humanity truly is when tempted by worldly desires (Rossetti, 67-69) . Furthermore, Laura finally gave in to the temptation and enjoyed the goblin's offering and: sucked until her lips were sore; then she threw away the emptied husks but picked up a stone and didn't know if it was night or day as she walked home alone. (Rossetti,136-139)After having partaken of the goblin goods, Laura ends up...... in the center of the sheet ......evocation to her sister. This same audience may not be aware that the Bible teaches to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31). This is the real message of "Goblin Market". Works Cited "Christina Rossetti". Poet.org.
